Family camp destroyed by fire on Green Lake DEDHAM, Maine — A fire late Wednesday night destroyed a family camp on Green Lake.
The call came in just after 10 p.m. reporting a fire off Green Lake Road, according to Dedham Fire Chief Frank Myatt.
Initial reports were confusing, and reported more than one camp on fire, Myatt said.
“As I came up past Jenkins Beach, I could see the flames in the air,” he said. “When I got to the scene, it was completely and totally engulfed. We couldn’t have saved it if we’d had a helicopter dump.”
Myatt said the cabin was one of three on the shore of Green Lake owned by the Mooney and Bailey families. The middle of the three cabins was the one on fire.
The fire had spread to the grass around the building and was burning toward the other cabins on either side. The blaze melted some of the plastic latticework around the base of both those buildings, Myatt said.
“There was nothing we could do but pour water on it until it was out,” he said.
The 80-year-old building was destroyed by the fire. There was no insurance on it.
Firefighters are still investigating how the fire started at the camp, which was not occupied at the time of the blaze. A tree had come down on power lines, and there were lines on the ground, Myatt said.
“It’s possible that’s what started it,” he said.
The Dedham-Lucerne Fire Department had assistance from the Ellsworth Fire Department under the mutual aid agreement between the towns.
